Controlling the Cost of Tuition

Miami Tuition Promise

Since 2016, the Miami Tuition Promise has frozen tuition, housing, meals, special purpose, and course fees for four years for each incoming class, providing cost certainty for students and families. By holding these costs constant, Miami provides the confidence students and families need to plan financially for a college education. Cost stability also ensures that a student’s renewable scholarships and financial aid dollars retain their value during the four-year Miami experience.

Miami Access Initiative

The Miami Access Initiative ensures that academically competitive students from Ohio families with an income of $35,000 or less pay no tuition and fees. In addition, factoring in financial aid, 16% of all first-year students in fall 2021 paid no tuition and fees and an additional 36% paid less than $5,000 in tuition and fees to attend Miami’s Oxford campus.

Miami Tuition Cap

Students pay no extra tuition beyond 12 credit hours per semester, and more than 60% of academic programs offer a three-year pathway to completion — providing more value for the same tuition.

Miami Lean Initiative

In Miami’s ongoing Lean initiative to reduce costs and maximize efficiency, we have gained more than $111 million in new revenue or efficiencies while reinvesting in critical strategic priorities and building academic quality.

Summer Tuition Discount

Thanks to a 20 percent discount on summer tuition rates for online courses for Ohio students, Miami University undergraduates saved $1.2 million in summer 2021 compared with fall/spring rates. Over the past two years, the discount saved students $2.8 million. The summer tuition discount provides students with immediate savings and additional opportunities to complete coursework and reduce their time to degree.

Winter Tuition Discount

Thanks to a 20 percent discount on winter-term tuition rates for online courses for Ohio students, Miami University undergraduates saved $790,000 last winter and $1.6 million over the past two years.

Savings for Students

Since 2017, the university has negotiated lower text book prices, resulting in more than $1.7 million in savings for students. Additionally, a shift to digital materials has resulted in more than $1.2 million in savings.

Scholarships

The amount of financial aid awarded to Miami students has grown from $35.7 million to $148 million over the last ten years. 52% of fall 2021 first-year Ohio students paid between $0-$5,000 per year to attend Miami’s Oxford campus. Average merit scholarships for first-year students entering in fall 2021 was $10,092 for Ohio students and $16,473 for out-of-state students.
